Manual for Classification of Dams

Classification of Dams

The design, inspection, and maintenance criteria for a dam are based on its classification. In Nebraska, dams are classified by their size and their hazard potential.

NOAA Atlas 14 Point Precipitation Frequency Estimates

The updated precipitation frequency estimates should be used when designing dams in Nebraska.

Probable Maximum Precipitation Cover

Nebraska Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) Study Report and Appendix F, Short Storm List Storm Analysis

In 2008, a Statewide Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) Sutdy was completed for Nebraska. The PMP values presented in the study may be used to establish design precipitation depths for dams in Nebraska.

Precipitation - Annual Exceedance Probability Study for Nebraska

In 2026, a Statewide Precipitation Study was completed for Nebraska.  The study provides precipitation frequency information that may be used to help determine the probability of various hydraulic loading conditions when assessing the condition and safety of existing dams.

An online tool is available to provide precipitation-frequency estimates for specific locations throughout Nebraska. The tool allows users to obtain estimates based on location and selected precipitation frequency and duration.Nebraska Precipitation AEP Web Application
