Petroleum Prices by Product

Kerosene ($34.16) had the highest price among the petroleum products in 2023, followed by aviation gasoline ($32.62), distillate fuel ($28.45), motor gasoline ($28.29), jet fuel ($20.75), propane ($16.73), and residual fuel ($17.90).
From 2022 to 2023, all fuel prices fell. Distillate fuel decreased 28.5 percent, motor gasoline decreased 28.3 percent, jet fuel decreased 19.9 percent, propane decreased 18.2 percent, kerosene decreased 12.3 percent, residual fuel decreased 10.2 percent, and aviation gasoline decreased 9.4 percent.

Expenditures on petroleum decreased to $6,837.0 million ($6.8 billion) in 2023, which was a 15.3–percent decrease from 2022 expenditures of $8,067.3 million ($8.1 billion).
The transportation sector spent over three–quarters (83 percent) of the total expenditures. The industrial sector spent 14 percent, the commercial sector spent 1.5 percent, and the residential sector spent 1.3 percent, while the electric power sector spent less than 1 percent (0.18%). (Figure 1)

Diesel fuel's monthly consumption in February of 2026 was above February 2025's (last year's) consumption, at the upper boundary of the five–year range, and above the five–year average consumption. (Figure 1)
