DWEE begins weekly Public Lake Sampling

The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy and its partners have begun weekly sampling of public lakes across Nebraska.

This sampling will test for microcystin – a toxin produced by harmful algal blooms (HABs), also known as toxic blue-green algae – and E. coli bacteria. DWEE and its partners collect these samples at 50 public recreational lakes (55 beach sites) throughout the state from May through September.

DWEE opens application period for Grid Resiliency Grant Program

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (DWEE) is accepting applications for its Grid Resiliency Grant Program. These grants will fund projects that result in a more resilient electrical grid.

The application period is open through June 21, 2024. Eligible applicants include:

· Electric grid operators
· Electricity storage operations
· Electricity generators
· Transmission owners and operators
· Electric distribution providers
· Fuel suppliers
· Energy operators

The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (DWEE) and its partners are preparing to start harmful algal bloom (HAB) sampling season at Nebraska’s public lakes.

Between May and September, the state tests for HABs at 50 public lakes (55 beach sites) each week to protect public health. HABs, also referred to as toxic blue-green algae, refer to certain strains of cyanobacteria that produce the toxin microcystin.
