Based on the sun index level, Nebraska is ranked thirteenth among the states with the greatest energy potential from solar power, according to a sun index developed for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) using data provided by NREL's Renewable Resource Data Center.

Nebraska has the fifteenth–largest installed capacity of wind in the country, based on the latest figures. At the end of 2024, Nebraska had the installed capacity of 3,522.8 megawatts, which is 2.3 percent of the nation's installed capacity of 153,489.1 megawatts. Texas had the largest installed capacity (42,282.9 megawatts which is 27.5 percent of the nation's total), and Tennessee had the smallest installed capacity (1.8 megawatts). Forty–three states had utility–scale wind facilities.

In 2021, Nebraska consumed 934.12 trillion British thermal units (Btu) of primary energy and 217.40 trillion Btu of energy from renewable energy resources as shown in Figure 1 below.

Renewable resources met 23 percent of Nebraska's energy consumption as shown in the data table below. Nebraska consumed energy from these renewable resources in 2021:

Numbers for 2024 show that 99.96 percent of the coal transported to Nebraska for electricity generation and industrial plants (excluding coke) came from Wyoming. The rest of the coal (0.04 percent) transported to Nebraska came from Colorado. The entire coal supply for the state was imported domestically by railroad.

Winter demand for diesel fuel normally boosts diesel fuel prices. Although diesel is consumed in both the transportation and the agricultural sectors, the prices below reflect transportation sector prices. Diesel fuel is used for internal combustion in diesel engines.
