Expenditures in Nebraska for fertilizer were $2,050 million in 2024. Expenditures are slowly falling from $2,270 million in 2022, which was a record high.

The expenditures are in nominal dollars to provide a better comparison.

Expenditures on electricity increased to $308.2 million in 2024, which was a 4.0–percent increase from 2023 expenditures of $296.3 million.

The survey that includes the cost of electricity for irrigation was conducted by the Nebraska Rural Electric Association annually from 1980 to 1994 and every two years after 1994. The average column in each table contains the average of all the systems, not just the systems in that table.

In 2023, the industrial sector consumed nearly half (44 percent) of Nebraska's total energy consumption. The other three end–use sectors comprised relatively equal portions of Nebraska's total energy consumption. Twenty–four (24) percent of the energy consumed in Nebraska was used in the transportation sector. The residential sector consumed 16 percent, and the commercial sector consumed 16 percent (Figure 1).

The total of both motor gasoline consumption and ethanol-blended fuel consumption in 2025 was less than one percent (0.15%) lower than in 2024.

Total consumption of motor gasoline and ethanol–blended fuel in the month of April 2026 was 76,933,090 gallons, which was 2.1 percent higher than the previous month and 0.5 percent higher than April 2025.

April 2026's consumption was at the upper boundary of the five–year range, above the five–year average, and relatively the same as April 2025's (last year's) consumption. (Figure 1)

Energy intensity is the ratio of energy input per unit of economic output, or the amount of energy used to produce a dollar's worth of goods and services. This measures the energy efficiency of the state's economy.
