The average price of coal increased threee cents per million Btu from 2022 to 2023. The industrial sector price decreased nine cents. The electric power sector price increased four cents. The residential sector, the commercial sector, and the transportation sector had no reported prices.

This was the plant producing wood pellets in Nebraska.

• Horizon Biofuels, Inc., in Fremont had the capacity to produce 20,000 short tons of pellets. Due to an incident in July 2025, the future of commercial pellets production at this plant is unknown at this time.

Pellet information is being surveyed by the Energy Information Administration. The results are released in the Densified Biomass Fuel Report.

In 2025, the surveyed companies reported that nearly 70 million kilowatthours of electricity were generated by biomass energy in Nebraska, a decrease of 22 percent from the 2024 generation of 88,691,000 kilowatthours (see graph and data table below).
