Natural Gas in Storage in Nebraska

The traditional inventory–building season is April to October for natural gas. The volume of working gas in underground storage by November 1 has to meet winter's demands under any circumstance. The volume in storage in March was approximately 65 percent of storage capacity.

In March 2026, Nebraska had the capacity to store 12,653 million cubic feet (mmcf) of working natural gas or working gas, and there was 8,182 mmcf working gas according to the Energy Information Administration estimates. As shown in Figure 1 and the data table below, this volume of working gas was an increase of 36 mmcf (or 0.4 percent) from the previous month and above 1 percent from March of the previous year. Stocks were above the five–year average, above the previous year's stocks, and above the five–year range.

Figure 1 is a graph showing Nebraska's natural gas in storage in comparison to the amount last year, the 5-year average, and the five-year range.
